According to BNEF’s base-case scenario, investments in the energy transition are expected to rise by an average of 25% over 2026-2030, higher than last year’s projections.
The report stated that in 2025, investments in energy transition exceeded capital expenditure on fossil fuels.
Energy Transition Investment
Electrified transport accounted for the largest share of investments in the energy transition market, with $893 billion spent on purchasing electric vehicles and developing charging infrastructure in 2025, up 21%.
The electrified transport sector was followed by the renewable energy sector, which secured $690 billion in new investments, down 9.5% due to market reforms in China.
Investment in the grid sector rose by 17% to $483 billion as operators raced to strengthen networks.
Investment in energy storage reached $71 billion, while investment in the clean industry reached $34 billion.
An earlier BNEF report said global energy storage capacity additions were expected to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/global-energy-storage-market-remains-resilient-amid-us-and-china-policy-changes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">grow</a> by 35% in 2025 to 94 GW or 247 GWh.
According to the report, investments in data centers were around half a trillion dollars in 2025, surpassing solar investments.
China remained the largest market for energy transition investments but saw its first decline since 2013. The European Union shrugged off headwinds to grow 18% to $455 billion. The U.S. also increased its investments in the energy transition by 3.5% to $378 billion, despite the Trump administration’s efforts to slow it.
Supply Chain Investments
Clean energy supply chain investments, which include spending on new clean-tech product factories and battery metal production assets, grew 6% to $127 billion in 2025. Factory investment dipped slightly, while spending on battery metals rose slightly.

Overcapacity continued to weigh on all sectors of the clean energy supply chain, with market dynamics varying by technology.
Investments in the solar manufacturing sector declined sharply since 2023, while battery manufacturing continued to expand. The report said that with overall investment still rising, downward pressure on clean-tech product prices is expected to persist.
According to Mercom Capital Group’s 2025 Annual and Q4 Solar Funding and M&amp;A Report, global corporate solar funding <a href="https://mercomindia.com/global-energy-storage-market-remains-resilient-amid-us-and-china-policy-changes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> by 16% year-over-year, with $22.2 billion raised in 175 deals, compared to $26.3 billion in 157 deals in 2024.
The BNEF Energy Transition Investment Trends 2026 report said China attracted the largest share of global clean-tech manufacturing investments.
While China&#8217;s dominance in the clean-tech sector is unlikely to diminish, its share of annual investment is gradually declining. Geographies including the U.S., EU, and India are continuing to onshore clean-tech supply chains despite challenges in operationalising manufacturing facilities.
The report also added that Chinese manufacturers are increasingly investing in overseas capacity to offset compressed margins at home.
Investments in the clean energy supply chain are expected to continue growing, but those in the wind manufacturing sector are likely to lag.
Equity Finance
Climate-tech companies raised $77.3 billion in private and public equity in 2025, up 53% YoY, marking the first year of growth after three consecutive years of decline.

Clean power, energy storage, and low-carbon transport companies led fundraising, bringing in $64.9 billion.
Public market activity recovered in 2025, while venture funding for startups declined for the third year in a row. Secondary offerings from already-listed firms accounted for 36% of total investments. The initial public offering (IPO) market also saw a surge, tripling YoY after a low number of IPOs in 2024.
China led climate tech equity funding with $24.5 billion, followed by the U.S. with $21.9 billion, and the European Union in third place.
Mergers and acquisitions remained strong with $99.1 billion closed in 2025, a 37% YoY rise. More than half of the transaction volume came from the acquisition of companies in the clean power and buildings sector.
Debt Issuance
In 2025, $1.2 trillion in debt was issued for energy transition, up 17% YoY.

Corporate and project finance rose 20%, offsetting a dip in government debt sales as they scaled back labeled issuances earmarked for mature transition sectors.
Debt issuance by U.S. and Chinese energy transition companies totaled around $295 billion. Europe’s total debt issuance rose by 11% YoY to $359 billion, led by increased debt issuance in the UK, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Companies tied to mature energy transition sectors raised $989 billion in 2025, while those with exposure to emerging sectors, including nuclear and hydrogen, raised $77 billion. The power grid sector saw the biggest growth in debt issuance, up 41% from 2024.
Labeled sustainable debt accounted for just 47% of energy transition debt financing in 2025, down from 58% in 2023. The report said that dwindling pricing benefits associated with sustainable labels may have pushed issuers away from the market.

					</table>China has overtaken Canada to return as the leading Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) supply-chain country in 2024, according to BloombergNEF’s (<a href="https://about.bnef.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BNEF</a>) fifth edition of the Global Lithium-Ion Battery Supply Chain Ranking.
The rankings cover 30 countries’ capability to build a secure, reliable, and sustainable Li-ion supply chain.
The U.S. has moved one spot up to reach joint-second with Canada. India is in 14th position, progressing from 16th.

China
China had lost the first spot for the first time in the rankings’ previous edition. While acknowledging China’s supply chain as the strongest, BNEF had said the region must be more proactive in tackling the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues to benefit its supply chain in the long term.
This time, low commercial electricity prices and advancing infrastructure primarily drove China’s rise in the rankings. Additionally, the country continues to host the heavily concentrated refined supply of battery raw materials despite diversifying efforts. Capacity additions across the manufacturing value chain are also centered in China.
Canada
In the previous report, Canada had improved its rankings because of its consistent manufacturing and production advances and strong ESG credentials. Close integration with the U.S. automotive sector also helped the country because of the ‘friendshoring’ goals of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Coming second this time, Canada faced slow Li-ion battery manufacturing scaling despite its considerable raw materials availability and stable investment environment.
The country performed well in the rankings’ supply chain categories. It announced additional governmental support for local supply chains. However, many companies, including E-One Moli, Ford, and Umicore, paused their Canada investments due to slower-than-expected demand.
United States
The U.S. climbed a spot to share the second rank with Canada, benefiting from the IRA in 2024. However, President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and rollback of the country’s climate goals risk undoing its advancements. These decisions are expected to reduce domestic demand and increase costs for U.S.-based manufacturers by moving investments to other regions.

Japan and South Korea
Established markets such as Japan and South Korea rose in rankings during the year, moving into the top ten. These nations were early movers in the battery supply chain segment, enabling them to maintain and improve their performance and navigate the challenging market conditions.
BNEF said newer players outside the APAC 1 region, which includes China, Japan, and South Korea, often face challenges while scaling up.
Emerging Markets
Some emerging markets improved their performance as well. Ellie Gomes-Callus, Metals and Mining Associate, BloombergNEF, said that countries such as Brazil and Indonesia grew the most in the report’s rankings. Ambitious policy roadmaps and rising demand drove this growth. “However, all eyes will be on the U.S. this year as it awaits the impact of the Trump administration’s trade policies,” added Gomes-Callus.
Europe
Europe’s battery supply chain potential exhibited indicators of decline. The continent’s battery manufacturing growth is not keeping pace with other regions, and its demand scores are weakening. The demand scores suffered due to small market sizes and market saturation, resulting in Eastern European and Nordic countries being overtaken.
Only two European countries featured in the rankings, Türkiye and the Czech Republic, improved their performance. Five nations maintained their positions, while two of the rankings’ largest declines were from European countries — Hungary and Finland. These countries dropped seven and six spots to rank 21st and 11th, respectively.
Hungary, the second-last in Europe, experienced declining performance in social and governmental metrics. Finland’s performance declined because of its complicated permitting processes and stagnant cobalt and nickel industries, with permitting-related issues holding up chemical company BASF’s battery component plant in Harjavalta, Finland.
The region risks falling behind some emerging markets without renewed momentum and targeted intervention to address barriers such as high operational costs and permitting issues.
According to a report by SolarPower Europe, the region’s battery energy storage market growth <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/europes-battery-storage-market-grew-15-in-2024-but-trails-2030-targets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slowed</a> year-over-year in 2024 despite growing 15%.
BNEF’s latest report said the global battery industry experienced oversupply last year, reducing profit margins and stoking trade tensions. The supply of raw materials increased despite such challenges. However, refined battery metal market trends are more mixed than mined metal trends.
In December last year, BNEF <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/lithium-ion-battery-historic-low-price" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Li-ion battery pack prices dropped 20% from 2023 to a record low of $115/kWh, the most significant annual decline since 2017. The price decrease was driven by factors such as overcapacity in cell manufacturing, economies of scale, lower metal and component costs, the adoption of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, and slower growth in electric vehicle sales.

					</table>Wind turbine installations have reached a record capacity of 121.6 GW in 2024, double the capacity commissioned in 2019, according to BloombergNEF (<a href="https://about.bnef.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BNEF</a>)’s 2024 Global Wind Turbine Market Shares.
In 2024, 109.9 GW, or 90%, of global wind additions were on land, while 11.7 GW were offshore.
The increasing number of installations is mainly driven by rapid growth in China. The country hosts six of the top ten turbine makers worldwide. However, wind capacity fell 10% year-over-year (YoY) from 2023 outside China.
Chinese companies held the top four places, replacing European and U.S. manufacturers for the first time from the top three spots. Chinese manufacturers relied on their home market, which comprised 70% of global installations.

<a href="https://www.goldwind.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goldwind</a> led the rankings, adding 19.3 GW of new wind capacity in 2024. <a href="https://www.envision-group.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Envision</a> retained second place with 14.5 GW. <a href="https://www.windeyenergy.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Windey</a> was third with 12.5 GW, and <a href="https://en.myse.com.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mingyang</a> ranked fourth, adding 12.2 GW.
“Chinese turbine makers increasingly dominate the global wind energy business,” said Cristian Dinca, wind associate, BloombergNEF and lead author of the report.
He added, “Installations are soaring in mainland China as provinces race to meet renewable energy targets by the end of 2025. While mainland China’s manufacturers look to expand sales abroad, they remain heavily reliant on their home market, which delivered almost all of their capacity additions in 2024.”
Offshore Wind Projects
Offshore wind capacity rose to 11.7 GW worldwide in 2024, a 6% YoY increase. Mainland China made up over half of global offshore wind additions, with 6.1 GW, making it the largest market in 2024.
<a href="https://www.siemensgamesa.com/global/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Siemens Gamesa</a> reclaimed its title as the top turbine supplier, surpassing <a href="https://www.vestas.in/en-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vestas</a> and its Chinese peers for the first time since 2020.
The Europe-based manufacturer provided machines for almost three-quarters of offshore wind farms outside mainland China in 2024.
With 4 GW of additions, the company more than doubled its capacity from 2023.
The U.S. added 5.4 GW of installations, the lowest in a decade. U.S. project developers were hampered by slow execution, reflecting a near-doubling in turbine delivery lead times, shortages of transformers and other electrical equipment, and high interest rates.
China’s installed capacity for wind power generation in 2024 <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-installed-capacity-solar-wind-increase" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased</a> by 18% YoY to about 520 GW, according to China’s National Energy Administration.
According to a report by Wood Mackenzie, the worldwide wind power industry forecast <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/global-wind-power-outlook-wood-mackenzie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declined</a> by 29 GW in Q4 2023, indicating that the cumulative installed capacity would fall to 2.35 TW by the end of 2032.

					</table>Europe will need to invest over $32 trillion in energy and related technologies to achieve a net-zero economy by 2050, according to BloombergNEF (<a href="https://about.bnef.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BNEF</a>).
Although Europe has invested $227 billion in the low-carbon energy transition, the average annual investments into clean energy supply, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and sustainable materials need to rise by more than three times this level for the rest of this decade and more than four times in the 2030s to stay on track towards a net-zero economy.
Electric transport and heating
To achieve a net-zero energy economy in Europe, over two-thirds of the required investment is needed for the demand side, emphasizing the need for consumers to embrace clean technologies more rapidly.
The transition requires a substantial investment in electric vehicles, with an estimated $21 trillion allocated from 2022-2050. Heat pumps also require significant investment, totaling $1.4 trillion over the same period.
The switch to electric alternatives presents a significant opportunity for European policymakers to tackle the two biggest challenges of reducing emissions from road transport and heating for buildings.
These sectors contribute almost half of all energy-related CO2 emissions in Europe today. Emissions can be reduced economically by rapidly displacing fossil fuel consumption through a shift to electric alternatives.
Europe needs to plan for an expanded and digitalized grid that can support more renewable energy, electric vehicles, and heat pumps. This means unlocking investments in new grid infrastructure worth $3.8 trillion by 2050 and encouraging flexible consumption patterns.
Renewables
BNEF&#8217;s Net Zero Scenario estimates that investment in new clean power assets in Europe will reach over $3.8 trillion by 2050, with almost 40% of this investment occurring before 2030. This means that annual investment in clean power over the rest of this decade must be twice the levels seen in 2022.
Solar and wind technologies are expected to supply 83% of the generation by 2050. To achieve this, onshore and offshore wind capacity across Europe is set to reach 675 GW by 2030, up from 234 GW in 2022.
Solar capacity is expected to grow to 774 GW by 2030, up from 226 GW currently installed. These variable generation sources will need to be supported by flexible backup generation.
The cheapest mix to provide the necessary backup hour-by-hour will come from batteries, gas plants with carbon capture and storage, and new nuclear plants in the medium term. In the longer term, gas plants fueled with green hydrogen may have a small but important role as production costs for the energy carrier fall.
Decarbonization
In Europe, clean power and electrification will reduce energy use for consumer end uses by 30% by 2050 due to the phase-out of inefficient fossil-fuel processes and other efficiency gains. By 2050, electricity will become the largest contributor to final energy use, rising from 20% today to 46%.
However, investing in low-carbon fuels and clean industrial production capacity is also necessary to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors.
The least-cost approach involves using carbon capture as a bridge to increase the deployment of green hydrogen.
Carbon capture and storage capacity will ramp up quickly, peaking and stabilizing at around 150 million tons annually by the mid-2030s.
Carbon capture and storage will be used in the power sector to provide critical backup and in industries such as cement and petrochemicals, where it can be cheaper and quicker to deploy than electrification.
Low-carbon hydrogen will be used in applications where electrification is unfeasible or uneconomic, such as in zero-carbon steel production, dispatchable power generation, shipping, and aviation.
By 2050, Europe will invest more than $904 billion in hydrogen and carbon capture and storage infrastructure to achieve a net-zero energy system.
BNEF indicates that low-carbon hydrogen production will increase from a low base to around 50 million metric tons by 2050, four times the current total use of hydrogen.
The World Economic Forum recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/philanthropic-financing-to-per-year-to-reach-net-zero" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> a fundraising vehicle to unlock $3 trillion of financing needed yearly to reach net zero, reverse nature loss, and restore biodiversity by 2050.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cop27-4-trillion-renewable-funding-annually-net-zero-2050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highlighted</a> the need for global investments of $4 trillion annually in renewable energy until 2030 to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
